About Us

Pioneering and mastering the concept of wholesale distribution of premium nursery stock is something we’ve been doing for nearly 50 years—long enough to know how to do it right.  Along the way we’ve learned how to treat customers as well as we treat our trees and plants.

Tradition.
With 30 years of landscape experience in his back pocket, Judson Alford opened Landscape Supply Inc. in 1951 and introduced re-wholesale landscape distribuiton to Michigan. judsonalfordIn 1955 he cut several sheltered acres into a stand of 100-year old oaks in Taylor to house our nursery stock. He established our family tradition of traveling throughout the upper midwest to hand-select the finest trees and field-grown plants, supervise their harvest, and bring them home. Son Jud Alford continued in his father’s bootsteps, expanding our company’s knowledge with horticultural study at Michigan State University. Grandson Steve Alford joined our staff after earning his horticultural degree at MSU. Today Jud, his wife Judy and son Steve play vital roles in our company.

Experience.
We’re a small company with a half-dozen full-time employees who together have more than 100 years of practical experience.  We know how to hand-select the finest plant specimens and have them dug and balled, wrapped, padded or containerized properly to prevent injury and maintain their vigor until you select them for your landscape project.  We know which trees and plants will thrive in the conditions you describe—and which will not.  We can recommend color combinations in flowering ornamentals and perennials that will surprise and delight  your customers for years to come.  We believe nature has a lot to teach us about creating beautiful landscapes—and even though we’ve racked up a century of experience, we’re still listening and learning.  Let us share our knowledge with you.

Care.
Three things we take the most care of  are our plants, our customers and our family.  We go to great lengths to ensure that our plants arrive safely and stay in top condition while they’re with us.  We’re careful with the use of our equipment, because we know three seconds of carelessness can destroy 30 years of nature’s patient work.  Our constant attention to detail and genuine helpfulness add value to our business and will keep you coming back.  We truly appreciate your business—and recognize that your trust keeps us going and growing.  We care for our family, and that means everyone who works with us.  We value our reputation—we’ve worked hard to attain it.  We’re proud of what we do, and we hope that pride is reflected in our work.

Relationships.
We’ve learned over the years that nurturing customers is as important as nurturing plant stock.  We respect nature and all it has provided to us.  We also respect our customers.  We operate our business this way:  We will treat you as we want to be treated ourselves.  It’s that simple.  We accord all customers the same level of respect, whether you represent global corporations or small family enterprises like our own.  We build trusting relationships with landscape professionals that reach across the generations, from father to son to grandson.  We take the time to learn about your preferences in plant selection, the size and scope of your projects, the timetables by which you run your business.  We also take the time to answer your questions fully.  If there is an unusual tree or plant you’ve had difficulty locating, ask us.  We’ll go the extra mile to help you find it.

Fundamentals.
Superior nursery stock is the foundation of our business.  We travel throughout the entire country from coast to coast locating the strongest, healthiest and most pleasing plant specimens.  We strive to ensure that they arrive here in excellent condition and are cared for throughout their stay with us.  When you select plants from our stock, we make sure they are loaded securely aboard your trucks, padded and covered for protection from windubrn on the way to your job site.  We also can deliver to accommodate your needs.

Our trade list includes more than 400 woody ornamentals, as well as perennials, ground covers, ornamental grasses and vines.  In addition, we stock paving brick, landscape edging, Canadian peat, grass seed, cypress mulch, nursery twine, brooms and tarpaulins.  Call us for a complete list of available plants and landscape supplies.
